Venture Philanthropy

The Foundation stewards charitable capital toward the research, frameworks, creative pilots, and community programs that advance children's digital wellbeing. Our model is designed to maximize the impact of every dollar contributed

How the Model Works

The Mindful Media Foundation operates a venture philanthropy and catalytic capital model. Charitable contributions from foundations, donor-advised funds, grants, and individual contributors are stewarded toward four areas of work.

Research
$0.00

Funding research partnerships with children's hospitals and academic institutions studying how media, technology, and AI affect children's development.

Creative Development
$0.00

Underwriting pilot projects that prove media designed around developmental science can be built.

Ethical AI Frameworks
$0.00

Supporting the development of evidence-based guidelines for AI in children's digital environments.

Community Access
$0.00

Funding programs that bring evidence-based media and technology to Head Start centers, under-resourced school districts, and community health settings.

All charitable contributions to the Foundation are used exclusively to fund the Foundation's research, creative development, and community access programs. The evidence and frameworks this work produces benefit the broader ecosystem, including institutions, clinicians, educators, families, and the commercial products that put research into practice.

Use Grant Capital to Drive Scalable Impact

One of the Foundation's most powerful funding mechanisms is the recoverable grant option. A recoverable grant is a charitable contribution that funds specific Foundation programs with the expectation that, if the work generates revenue or recoverable value, a portion of that value is returned to the Foundation to fund additional work.

Here is how it works:

A funder makes a recoverable contribution to the Foundation. The Foundation deploys that capital toward research, creative pilots, or community programs. If the funded work produces outcomes with recoverable value (for example, a creative pilot that is later licensed for commercial distribution), a portion of that value flows back to the Foundation. The Foundation reinvests recovered funds into its next cycle of research, creative development, and community access.

This is not an investment in the traditional sense. There is no equity, no ownership stake, and no guaranteed financial return to the contributor. The "return" is to the Foundation itself: recovered value funds more research, more pilots, and more community access. The funder's contribution keeps working. Often easier than PRIs or direct equity investing.

For funders who want their charitable dollars to have a compounding effect, the recoverable grant model offers a way to fund the Foundation's mission while creating a sustainable cycle of reinvestment.

Ways To Give

  • Direct grants from private foundations, family foundations, and institutional funders. The Foundation welcomes various grant types aligned with our research, creative development, ethical AI, and community access programs.

  • Recommend a grant to the Mindful Media Foundation through your donor-advised fund. The Foundation is a qualified 501(c)(3) recipient. DAF contributions can be directed through the LOHAS fund pathway or through your fund administrator directly.

  • Charitable contributions structured as recoverable grants, where recovered value is reinvested into the Foundation's programs. See the Recoverable Grant Model section above for details.

  • Direct donations from individuals who want to support the Foundation's mission. All contributions are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.

  • The Foundation accepts contributions of appreciated securities, cryptocurrency, real estate, and other non-cash assets. Contact us for details on structuring non-cash contributions.
